Freddie McGregor Editorial Review
reprinted with permission of FreddieMac.org affiliate Amazon.com. Known to his
fans as "Freddie Mac" - the long-time reggae crooner's double-disc
best of collection leap-frogs indiscriminately among Freddie Mac's rootsy
1970's music, funkier 1980's work, and computer-driven 1990's sounds. At times,
when he waxes rasta righteous tunes like "Natural Collie" and
"Bobby Babylon" - he sounds similar to a raagaa-music Jamaican Marvin
Gaye; but Mac lover's-rock persona finally outbids his disposition, which is
why he sounds more comfortable covering Main Ingredient's "Just Don't
Wanna Be Lonely" and The Sandpipers "Guantanamera." During his
1970's era prime-time, Freddie Mac could really do little wrong. Backed by
producer Clement Coxsone Dodd and his catchiest rhythms, McGregor's adapted
American doo-wop and velvety smooth Rhythm & Blues moves of groups like the
Spinners and O'Jays for a suave, commercial sound solid enough to successfully
turn even ode lyrics to spiritual joys of running shoes "Jogging"
into a hit song! - (slightly edited) - original author Richard Gehr.

Freddie McGregor
(known lovingly as "Freddie Mac") to zillions of
worldwide fans), is perhaps reggae's most long-lasting reggae artist, blessed
by an incredibly steady and lengthy career, starting way back in the 1960's,
when he was just 7-years old! Since then, he's spanned nearly every stylistic
shift in Jamaican music, from reggae, ska and rock-steady to Rastafarian roots
raagas to lovers rock (his particular specialty) to dabblings in dance &
dancehall music..
